Like magic! How our world organizes itself

From 28 August 2025 to 1 February 2026 | Free Space Forum Wissen

Our world often seems to organize itself magically – without any central control, but with complex effects. The new special exhibition ‘Like magic!’ at the Forum Wissen invites children and adults to discover fascinating natural phenomena such as cloud formation.

From 28 August 2025 to 1 February 2026, we will be presenting an exhibition at the University of Göttingen’s Knowledge Museum that explores dynamics and self-organization in nature. Visitors can observe a 3D simulation of cells, experience turbulent currents and experiment on a model wind farm trying to find the best position of the wind turbines.

The exhibition is based on current research findings from the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (MPI-DS) in Göttingen, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The exhibition makes complex phenomena clear and understandable – from molecular cell processes to atmospheric movement patterns.

“Like magic!” was curated by Tatjana Dübbel (Forum Wissen) and Manuel Maidorn (MPI-DS). Scientists from the MPI-DS were involved as well as a fifth-grade class from the Felix Klein Gymnasium school in Göttingen as a children’s advisory board for the exhibition. Their expert input included developing an interactive station.

The exhibition can be seen in the ‘Free space’ (80 square metres) of the Forum Wissen and is accompanied by an events programme, hands-on activities and a laser show on the façade of the museum.

An interactive exhibition in co-operation with the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self Organization.

Entry is free of charge.
Opening: Wednesday, 27 August 2025, 6.30 pm.
